I recently drove on 95 south and stopped at South of The Border...on the NC/SC state line. What a dump, however on the other side of 95 across from SOB there is a big pink motel. It seemed to be abandoned and closed down. I have googled it with no luck. I have found other web sites where people are asking about it also though. Anyone out there have any info - or perhaps explored it and have some pics of the inside? It is the tackiest looking thing ever I'm dying to know what's on the inside! Thanks for any in ::)fo!

It would take a trip to the courthouse or some locals who know the story, but I know where you're talking about. Mr. Schaefer who ran the place is deceased and his family makes a fortune in his beer distributorship but I think they must either make something from the place or are just trying to keep their oldest employees employed until they become eligible for Social Security. Schaefer was a decent man, kind of like Olly in Pennsylvania but he got too caught up in politics once and was indicted by the Federal Government for paying voters something like $5.00 to go to the polls and he went to prison for a while. But the Chief Justice of the SC Supreme Court, Julius Ness went to his parole hearing to speak in his support. He was a mensch but just got a little too caught up in politics. Although I thought the jail term was a little harsh for that offense (but see below).
But I suspect that the hotel was a competitor who thought they could feed off of South of the Border by charging lower rates and they must have failed.
Incidentally, Mr. Schaefer did use his political connections to get I-95 diverted quite a bit so it would go by his place of business. It was a costly change and there was a great deal of controversy about it. But he still was a mensch, as he was just trying to keep his business going and his employees their jobs. But that was a worse mark on his record than the $5.00 for voting. I think that's why he may have been targeted - the reroute of the interstate rather than the nominal sum for going to vote, which probably cost most of those rural voters more in gas than they got back. Incidentally, Dillon S.C. is the home of Ben Bernanke.
